Have negative perceptions at work and universities changed over time?
Thankfully both stories about my experience at university are over 40 years old and things have changed considerably over time. This is not to say that such incidents can't and don’t happen today but, if they do, they can often be challenged more easily. Whether it is in the UK, Africa, or anywhere else in the world, we need to work hard to ensure our inclusion and participation.
Things could be better in the West as compared to sub-Saharan Africa. We need to learn from each other, wherever we are, to overcome the stigma and discrimination that deaf and disabled people face. This may look different between societies but they amount to the same thing. None of us have all the answers. We face different questions by sharing what we have experienced so we can assist each other to move forward.
