Inspirational Porn Debate and Promoting Inclusion

By an #SOS participant on 09/02/2023

‘Inspirational Porn’ was coined by Stella Young, an Australian comedian, journalist, and disability rights activist, and describes another form of discrimination that portrays people with disabilities as being “inspirational” to able-bodied people on the basis of their life circumstances.

An exceptional model, worthy of replication in many universities. But who provides the funds to run this model?  The university, government or the parents?

Our experience of disability is context dependent but there is greater opportunity to share and learn from each other. There are good models of disability inclusive practices in Africa worthy of replication in the West. Likewise, there are good models in the West that can be replicated in Africa. The bottom line is us sharing these stories to inform and empower ourselves.

The exceptional benchmarking model of disabled-to-disabled groups, organisations, institutions is currently being funded by the University itself. Parents of the disabled students are not even aware, and the funding for such activities are not included into their fees.
