OPD's Lobby for Greater School Access (Kenya)
I have just spent two days trying to find a disability-friendly school that could accept a boy who has just completed his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (exams and passed very well. The sad thing is that the school to which he would have been admitted is totally inaccessible. We have got a scholarship with KCB Bank and today I had to plead with them to give us more time to get him an accessible school then get an admission letter. They were almost dropping him, and it took the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (PWD's) and my Organisation of Persons with Disabilities (OPD's) to get the temporary relief. So, I was just wondering if in the 21st century a child with a disability cannot access education in the school of their choice just because of their disability. I agree with people who say that OPD's must work harder to hold the duty bearers accountable.
Monitoring Kenya's Elections, Meru County, Kenya
The photo above is of a group of people with disabilities (PWDs) from Meru County, Kenya, who were asked to assist by observing and monitoring during party primaries of the 2022 national elections. However, the contracting organization had not factored in disability costs for field transport to enable this to happen. This issue was raised with the coordinator and the necessary funds were put in place. This shows that lobbying and self-advocacy can change situations.
