Traditional Views of Disability

By an #SOS participant on 07/02/2023

Traditionally, our great grandparents used to think that any kind of disability was an omen or curse . Even today, with all awareness being created, there are still abled persons who carry the trend of our grandparents, no matter how informed or learned they seem to be. I just wish that the Kenyan government & other organisations are that easy to  approach. Matters concerning disabled people, like acceptance right from village level, inclusion (with accessibility), job consideration, etc could be constitutionally materialised rather than just written on paper. I have great faith that a journey starts with a step. However, disability matters may delay, but one step per day will make the whole world to take seriously the rights of all the disabled people, if only they will realise that every individual running blood in his/her veins, is a disability carrier, either through accident, sickness or some injury along the life span of their living time. We don't pray for anybody to experience what we are going through as disabled persons, but our prayer is for the able bodied persons to have a feeling of humanity as they handle matters related to disability.
